OUR MISSION

The Kelly Mill Middle School Counseling Program is a program designed for the academic, personal/social, and career education of all students.  It is modeled after the South Carolina Comprehensive Developmental Guidance Program and consists of four components:  Guidance curriculum, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, and System Support.

Scheduling

Mass scheduling is completed each summer prior to the arrival of students.  Students will take 4 core subjects and 2 exploratory courses each semester.  Students may complete a “Schedule Change Request” form within the first 5 days of each semester to obtain desired courses.  All requests are subject to approval.

Academics

The goals of our academic programs are to promote academics by implementing a rewards system, reducing truancy, and monitoring student academic progress.  We anticipate that our efforts will reduce the retention rate, reduce discipline issues, increase academics, and improve career awareness.

Classroom Guidance

Our Counselors visit classrooms on a regular basis.  Guidance lessons may include conflict resolution, anxiety, study skills, career exploration, etc.  Students are encouraged to actively participate in each lesson.

Individual and Group Counseling

Counseling groups will be held periodically throughout the school year.  The content of these groups may vary depending on the needs of the students.  Counselors are always available for individual counseling sessions.  Students must have a pass from their teacher prior to visiting any counselor.  Students may also receive assistance through “Peer Mediation.”

Personal/Social

Our program strives to decrease inappropriate behaviors, promote Character Education and appropriate social skills, and implement gender appropriate mentoring groups.  Our goal is to reduce discipline referrals, encourage students to discover ways to reduce conflicts, and promote school awareness of adequate behaviors.

Career Guidance

Our program is designed to promote vocational education through classroom guidance, assessments, and completion of Individual Graduation Plans. Career activities include:  field studies, speakers, workshops, career fair, school-to-work day, college and business tours, etc. Students will be prepared for high school and their career paths, graduation rates will increase, and the dropout rate will be reduced.

The ASCA National Model® graphic represents the operational structure and components of ASCA’s National Model for School Counseling Programs. The graphic contains three levels and four squares, each representing one of the major systems of the ASCA National Model; the arrows in each square point to the systems they influence as in a building- block approach. The arrows for the foundation (the first level) lead to the management and delivery (the second level). These in turn lead to the accountability system. Finally, look closely, once can see how the black arrow points from accountability down to the foundation component represents school counselor skills and attitudes of

leadership, advocacy, collaboration, which lead to systemic change.
